Frequently Asked Questions
Who is your ideal client?
We work best with individuals, families, and retirees who value comprehensive financial planning alongside investment management. Many are approaching retirement, navigating a major life transition, or simply looking for a more proactive, personalized relationship than they've had before. Above all, we look for people who are advice-receptive and want a long-term partnership. We offer a range of service options for one reason: we want to help as many people as we can.
Are there other costs beyond your advisory fee?
Yes — like most investment accounts, there are a few. The mutual funds and ETFs in your portfolio carry their own internal expense ratios (charged by the fund company, not us), and some investments include a $24 per-trade ticket charge through the custodian. Alternative investments may also carry a performance fee set by the fund manager. None of these are paid to us — and we walk you through every cost before you invest, working to keep them as low as possible.
How are fees billed?
Investment management fees are billed monthly in arrears. Engagement fees are paid upfront, in advance. All fees are collected via ACH.
Where is my money held, and are you a fiduciary?
Your accounts are custodied at Charles Schwab — we never take custody of your assets ourselves. As a CFP® professional and SEC Registered Investment Adviser, we're a fiduciary 100% of the time — legally and ethically bound to put your interests first.
What are your qualifications?
David has been a financial advisor since 2004 and founded The WealthPlan in 2010 as an independent firm. He earned a B.S.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional and also holds the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) and Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) designations from The American College of Financial Services.

David Warshaw, CFP®

HI, I’m David Warshaw

In 2003, I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a double major in finance and accounting. After hearing a guest lecture from a local financial planner, I was inspired and had an inkling that this profession was for me. I officially started my financial advisory career a year later at Ameriprise Financial.

Over time, I developed the entrepreneurial spirit and launched The WealthPlan in 2011 as an independent advisor. In addition to being a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, I hold both the Chartered Financial Consultant and Charted Life Underwriter designations.

I live in Great Neck, Long Island, with my wife Diana and our little daughter Sophia, a.k.a., The Sophinator!
